- Recs from Marilyn Gilbert: "LI's only African Restaurant, Taste of Africa, at 1747 Deer Park Ave, Deer Park, NY 11729, 631-522-1118. In a modest storefront just south of Exit 51 on the LIE, it offers fabulous, unusual food. Specialties are available in vegan and vegetarian cuisine, but there are lots of other African choices with meat and selections on the American menu for more conservative eaters. The Ghanian owner/chef, PK, offers a sampler so you can try before you order. Very unusual and very yummy. Also, I cannot say enough good things about Franklin Furniture Refinishing, at 344 Franklin Avenue, Franklin Square 11010, 516-354-8765. Louie and Darren's card should say, "Better Than New," because that is the condition in which they returned my refinished (previously condemned by the insurance company) furniture to me. Visit "my showroom" (my house) and see the beauty of their work!! Decently priced, too. Also, in a world of uncaring, slipshod contractors, they also both stand out for care, work ethic, and compassion."
