VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES!

The Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society’s “Then & Now” 2nd grade field trip program is looking for a few more teachers to lead some of our morning sessions scheduled during the springtime in our two colonial kitchens. Two teachers work in tandem using artifacts in our kitchens to demonstrate how families used to live and work in the house. Children make butter to eat with their picnic lunch on the porch and may visit the historic barn for a guessing game of tools and outdoor artifacts. For further particulars contact Joan DeMeo Lager at joan@cowneck.org or 516-365-9074.

CBS video on Rocking the Boat program - Marilyn Gilbert shared this video about a program with which her husband has been involved for many years.

From Ute Johnson, Secretary of PWGreen: Read the attached newsletter from the PwGreen organization.

From Marilyn Gilbert: "This is a video of my niece, Heidi Frazier, who owns a used bookstore in Caldwell, a very small town in Texas without a library. It was filmed by Texas Rural Television, a kind of PBS.  it's inspiring and uplifting."

Maybe you have some books to share with Heidi?

Geri Ganzhaufer shares this site as a great volunteer opportunity: Volunteer Match. According to the site, "VolunteerMatch is the most effective way to recruit highly qualified volunteers for your nonprofit. We match you with people who are passionate about and committed to your cause, and who can help when and where you need them." Thanks, Geri!

From Barbara Mayer: How can you do a good deed for others at the same time you do a good deed for yourself by exercising? Use the Charity Miles app on your phone when you go for a walk, run or bike ride. It is a free app that clocks your mileage (Note: I find it overestimates how far I've gone, so don't kid yourself, but that gives more money to my charity since donations are made per mile!) and has sponsors that donate to the charity of your choice. There are lots to choose from, including: Autism Speaks, Habitat for Humanity, Stand Up to Cancer, American Diabetes Association, Wounded Warrior Project, and many more. Hopefully, you're exercising anyway, so make it doubly valuable!

Looking for a worthwhile volunteer opportunity? This was sent to the webmaster...

"CAPS is a non-profit whose mission is to keep children safe through education. We offer workshops on topics such as personal safety, child abuse, bully prevention, internet safety, relational aggression, sexual harassment and date rape. Each workshop is presented in classroom settings by professionally trained volunteers at no cost to schools.  Although many of our volunteers are retired teachers, we welcome all candidates. We have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with  the Port schools for many years.

And now for my pitch… we are always looking for new volunteers who are looking to continue their work with children but without the pressure of lesson plans, observations, evaluations, report cards, etc. Our volunteers frequently report a high level of satisfaction with the work they do.   Perhaps you can disseminate this to your membership.

I would be happy to talk to you further about volunteer opportunities or to talk to your membership if appropriate.

Thank you for your help! "
